Sena Fest: A Cozy Community Mall for Pokemon Go
The community mall Sena Fest was open for business in 2013. It was located on the south side of the Taksin Bridge on the west bank of Chao Phraya River, usually called Thonburi area. Sena Fest featured similar characteristics to other community malls. The central space was not air-conditioned; the ceiling was very high, so it was not uncomfortable. Actually, I quite liked the arrangement as it consumed much less energy and far greener than a typical overly cool, big shopping mall.
There were many restaurants, bakery, coffee shops, and other miscellaneous shops on the main floors with a supermarket on the ground floor. There were also clinics, banks, children playground and educational areas. While there were no expensive brand name shops for clothes or cineplex as in the large shopping malls, the diversity of services were sufficient. Actually, the facility was definitely on the high-end side with an Apple service shop, a Starbuck, Villa Supermarket and strings of upmarket restaurants that clearly catered to tastes of trendy Thai urbanites.
For transportation, there were some 300 parking spaces. I once drove there for lunch and there were some unoccupied parking slots. The nearest BTS sky train station was the Krung Thonburi S7, about 500 meters away on foot. The Saphan Taksin S6 BTS station was around 800 m away across the river. To get the Sena Fest, one had to walk down from the station to the Sathorn Pier and went up a very high stair to cross the bridge. The view from the bridge was quite spectacular. There is also the Taksin Pier, also called Pepsi Pier, which was just across the river from the Sathorn Pier.
There had been many communities malls in the Thonburi areas. They were generally quite cozy and served the local communities. However, the arrival of the super luxurious IconSiam about 1 km to the North might affect the business climate considerably. I hoped that those small community malls would survive and prosper.
My preference for Sena Fest over other nearby community malls was undoubtedly due to Pokemon activities. For Pokemon Go trainers, the Sena Fest had been one of a hot spot due to the presence of an EX raid gym on the other side of the road. I received invitations from friends in the area and specifically travel for Ex Raid occasionally. The Sena Fest was the best resting place around with many choices for lunch or coffee break. While there were some restaurants outsides, the mall hosted its own gym and several pokestops which made them more favorable.
The 'Library' EX raid gym was located at the edge of a small park under the Taksin Bridge. This Taksin Bridge Park was one of many that were developed in small spaces around some infrastructure by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. In general, it had no distinction and was somewhat run-down. However, it provided much needed green spaces and recreational area for locals. The park was densely populated during early evening with people exercising or playing sports.
This gym was generally quite active with frequent calls for 5-stars boss raid parties. Due to the location, it was not a gym that one could show up and expected to join a party right away. A better bet was to be there just before the egg hatched. The best option was to check the social network, i.e. LINE, to ensure that enough people would come.
